Referral website, not the contractor. How it works

Garage door repair in Corpus Christi usually means a broken spring, a rusted cable or roller, an opener problem, or a door that has to meet windstorm rules when it's replaced.

Corpus Garage Door is a referral website, not a garage door company. We send your request to one independent local garage door company. You never pay us; companies we refer you to may pay us for referrals. Pricing and scheduling come from that company.

Door stuck open before a storm, or a car trapped inside? Don't force the door or pull the red release while it's open, and send a request with the form.

What the Coastal Bend does to a garage door

A garage door here fails for the same reasons as anywhere else, plus three local ones.

Salt in the air. FEMA's guidance on corrosion in coastal areas, which the City of Corpus Christi posts for builders, explains that breaking waves throw salt into the air and the wind carries it inland. The amount is greatest within the first 300 to 3,000 feet of the shoreline, but studies have measured faster corrosion as far as 5 to 10 miles inland. The same bulletin notes that humidity keeps metal damp longer, which speeds rust. On a garage door, that shows up first on the torsion spring, the lift cables, the roller stems and the hinges: small parts under load.

Hurricane wind. Hurricane Celia in 1970 brought a 161 mph gust at the Weather Service office in Corpus Christi, and the Weather Service says 70 percent of the city's homes took some damage. When Harvey came ashore in 2017, NOAA's storm records describe "widespread minor property damage" in Corpus Christi from lost shingles and downed fences, and the Weather Service logged an 81 mph gust near Flour Bluff. Three years later, Hurricane Hanna made landfall on Padre Island; the National Hurricane Center reported a 57-knot gust (about 66 mph) at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi. The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) calls garage doors "particularly vulnerable to high winds" because they span a wide opening and are built of relatively light material.

Storm water. Harvey's storm tide reached 4 to 6 feet on Padre Island from the Laguna Madre, according to NOAA. A door that has sat in salt water needs its bottom brackets, cables and rollers checked, even if it still opens.

Start with what you see

Most calls come down to a handful of parts. Match the symptom, then read the page for that repair.

What it costs: national ranges, checked October 2026

These are national figures, not quotes from a Corpus Christi company. Use them to judge whether a quote is in the normal range.

Job National range Source
Springs on a one-car door with two springs About $150 to $350 HomeAdvisor
New opener, installed About $390 to $650 Thumbtack
New door built for hurricane areas, installed About $800 to $1,500 HomeAdvisor

Thumbtack puts most general garage door repairs between about $235 and $695, with most people paying around $403. Repair is the better buy when one part failed. A new door makes more sense when panels are rusted through, several sections are damaged, or your insurer needs a door that meets the windstorm code. The full table, with every part, is in the garage door repair cost guide.

Services you can request

Replacing the door? Check two things first

Windstorm coverage. The Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA) covers the 14 first-tier coastal counties, including Nueces and San Patricio. TDI's storm-repair handout tells homeowners in those counties to call their insurance agent to find out whether repairs need to meet the building code. If the work is inspected and passes, TDI issues a Certificate of Compliance, Form WPI-8. Garage doors are not on TDI's list of repairs that don't need a windstorm inspection. Before you replace a door, ask your agent or call TDI at (800) 248-6032. Our wind-rated garage door page explains ratings, labels and what to ask.

A city permit. The City of Corpus Christi's homeowner permitting guide lists "replacing a garage door" as work that needs a permit. Development Services is at (361) 826-3240. Ask whether the company you hire pulls the permit.

Springs and cables are a technician's job

DASMA, the trade association for garage door and opener manufacturers, says spring systems "should be repaired only by trained professionals" and that lift cables should be replaced only by a trained technician, because both are under high spring tension. A case series from Massachusetts Eye and Ear described seven patients, seen between 2008 and 2023, who suffered open-globe eye injuries when a spring dislodged while they were trying to repair their garage door.

Safe jobs for a homeowner: wipe the safety-sensor lenses, change the remote battery, check that the manual lock isn't engaged, and rinse or wipe salt film off the hardware without touching the springs or bottom brackets.

Where we take requests from

The form takes requests from all of Corpus Christi and these nearby communities:

Common questions

Who actually works on my garage door?

An independent local garage door company. Corpus Garage Door is a referral website: we don't employ technicians or sell doors. We send your request to one company, and that company quotes you, schedules the visit and does the work on its own terms.

My spring broke. Can I still open the door?

Leave it. DASMA's consumer checklist (TDS 167) says that if a spring is broken, don't operate the door until the spring is replaced. The spring was carrying the door's weight; without it, the door is heavy and can drop. Repeated tries with the opener can also damage the opener.

Do I need a windstorm inspection to replace my garage door?

Ask before you buy. Corpus Christi, Robstown and Flour Bluff are in Nueces County, and Portland is in San Patricio County, both in the TWIA coverage area. Garage doors aren't on TDI's list of repairs that skip an inspection. Call your insurance agent or TDI at (800) 248-6032.

Does Corpus Christi require a permit for a new garage door?

The City of Corpus Christi's homeowner permitting guide lists replacing a garage door among the jobs that need a permit. Development Services is at (361) 826-3240. Portland and Robstown have their own building departments.

Why do garage doors rust so fast here?

Salt carried inland on the wind settles on metal and holds moisture against it. FEMA's coastal corrosion guidance says salt spray is heaviest within the first 300 to 3,000 feet of the shoreline, and that faster corrosion has been measured as far as 5 to 10 miles inland. Springs, cables, rollers and hinges show it first.

Does insurance pay for a garage door damaged in a hurricane?

Wind damage from a covered storm may be paid after your deductible; a spring that wore out generally isn't. On the coast, wind coverage may sit in a separate TWIA policy with its own deductible. The Texas Department of Insurance warns that percentage deductibles can be large. Ask your agent.
